Nicest day of the year so far in 2017, so time to review the winter sports and start thinking of the spring opportunities. Sledge Hockey highlights are too many to mention here. There were tournaments in Bridgewater, Halifax and Sydney. Learn to Sledge programs are in all 6 regions of NS. And the first provincial team will be going to Nationals in Quebec May 12-14. CADS Alpine Ski and Snowboard continues on 3 hills and despite variable snow conditions, provided many ski experiences. The first para snowboard instructor course was held at Wentworth in April. Wheelchair Curling – After a very thrilling provincials in Pictou, Team Hubley-Bolivar is off to Nationals in Quebec April 24-30 Wheelchair Basketball – The Maritime Finals were just held in Fredericton and NS was 1st and 2nd in the B league. In addition, Nova Scotia was runner-up in the A league Finals. Spring league has just started in Brookside on Wedesndays (7:30-9:30P). And Eastern U23 Championships will be held at SMU May 12-14). New this year at Bible Hill Junior High in Truro, will be an 8 week program starting May 13th. Table Tennis – Very successful program with a good coaching every Wednesday at Cole Harbour Place in the squash courts. We will have four athletes representing NS at Nationals in July in Markham. Congrats to Curtis Caron who won gold at U23 America’s in Sao Paulo last month. CrossFit – In Bayers Lake, a new program has started with lots of interest. The next open gym time is April 23 Boccia – Last month, Fun Fest was held at Canada Games Centre with good competition and new players! On Sept 16th, at the Oval, there will be a Canada 150 opportunity to play Boccia. Swimming – Last month three athletes represented NS at the CAN-AM’s, and captured six 1st place finishes. Athletics – Continue to train hard and are busy travelling for competition. Coming up in May, Pam Lejean and Casey Perrin go to Switzerland, while Ben Brown and Ryan Shay travel to Italy for world cup competition. Goal Ball – Jr Male and Female Nationals just wrapped up in Montreal, and did NS proud! The Senior Women and Men’s teams are off to BC for Nationals April 22-23. Powerchair Soccer – ***new sport*** on April 22, there will be a ‘Have a Try It’ day at Citadel Community Centre 1-3pm. Para Badminton – in the works to start an 6 week program at the Canada Games this summer. Triathlon – Parasport is looking to build teams for Bridgetown triathlon on August 6th. Able Bodied are welcome to join our team, and help raise money, on the flattest route in NS And finally…May 20th, there are a number of wheelchairs entered into the 5k Bluenose Marathon weekend event at 2pm in Halifax.
