AFTER SCHOOL HIKES FOR GRADE 6 – 9 GIRLS Report 2017-18

From October 2017 to March 2018 grade 6 – 9 girls registered in the GO Get Outside in Nature after school program have been able to go on a weekly hike after school with two experienced leaders.

On our hikes we have explored around Baddeck, such as Kidston Island (with help from Baddeck Marine) and the Silver Dart trail; several routes on Beinn Bhreagh, and in the Big Baddeck area, such as Uisge Ban Falls. Permission was sought, willingly given and gratefully received where appropriate.

A Department of Natural Resources officer volunteered to speak to participants about recommended ways to act and be prepared to meet wildlife when out in nature. Iris Kedmi led the group in a ‘forest bathing’ experience, where we were taken through the forest, being attentive to each of our senses in turn and what they tell us about our surroundings. Generous volunteer support was given by qualified back-up leaders when needed. We are very grateful to parents and grandparents who contributed as drivers, who made it possible for the girls to be there and gave helpful and positive feedback.

This program would not have happened without the support and encouragement of Vince Forrestall in his role as Co-ordinator of Physical Activity Strategy for ‘Naturally Active Victoria County’. Named the GO Get Outside in Nature program, it came under provincial funding of the ‘After the Bell’ program. Participants received a GO logo hoodie and a whistle for use in the woods. Vince Forrestall made sure we were connected to Baddeck Academy administration for their partnership, and to school caterer Rita Campbell, who made up a healthy snack for us each week.

It was great fun for us as leaders to spend the time with such an energetic group of girls. We all enjoyed the walks and the company, and saw fantastic views and sunsets! It is hoped that we will be able to take it up again in the fall, if there is interest. Keep an eye/ear out! I would like to encourage outdoors people who have experience with young people or groups and are willing to provide the necessary checks to consider being leaders or back-up leaders. Thank you to all who helped! Judy King, Deborah Baldwin.

Girls in grades 6-9 at Baddeck Academy are welcome to join the GO Get Outside in Nature after school program on Thursdays after school, for hiking and snowshoeing, possibly cross-country skiing. Started Thursday January 18th, 2018, meet at 3 pm in the cafeteria for healthy snack. Registration forms in the school office, to be filled out and returned by January 12th, 2018.
