Field Leader – Hiking Courses in NS in 2017
Six Field Leader – Hiking Courses will be offered from June to December in Sydney, Parrsboro, Halifax, Antigonish, Wolfville and Yarmouth. They will provide participants with Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) national certification in Field Leader – Hiking. This includes skills to organize and lead others in a one day, educational or activity based experience in a natural environment. Courses are two days in length and will provide successful candidates with the necessary skills to be a confident hiking leader. The program is suitable for hiking club leaders, trail group volunteers, recreation department staff, teachers, 4H leaders, Scout and Guide leaders, parents or individuals interested in leading hikes. Courses are taught by OCC certified instructors. The cost is $100 to $125. The course is offered through Hike Nova Scotia in partnership with the Nova Scotia Chapter of the OCC and supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. Hike NS 2017-18 Courses and Workshops Happening Across Nova Scotia
Hike NS’s schedule of courses and workshops across Nova Scotia is now available for 2017-18. Beginning June 2017 through to February 2018, they range from how to share nature with children to how to be a hike leader to navigation.
The specific offerings include:Re-Connecting with Nature Workshops; Field Leader – Hiking Courses; Field Leader – Winter Module; Field Leader – Overnight Module; Navigation Maps & Compass Courses; and WILD Connect Course. Dates, locations and costs vary, depending upon the course or workshop.

HELD – Field Leader – Winter Leadership Module
HELD – Field Leader – Overnight Course HELD Oct. 22-23, 2016 in Economy
A Field Leader – Overnight module will be offered in Economy on October 22 and 23. It will provide participants Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) training and certification in Field Leader – Overnight and qualifies participants to lead longer trips in low-risk terrain classes relevant to their activity. A pre-requisite to the course is at least one OCC Field Leader course. The module will review and deepen the event cycle and offers effective group management techniques for longer outdoor trips. Participants are required to read a manual, and participate in an online planning meeting beforehand. All of the instruction will be outdoors, including an overnight hiking trip on an 18 km hiking loop. The course is taught by an OCC certified instructor. The cost is $125 ($115 for current paid Hike NS members and $100 for Duke of Ed leaders). The course is offered through Hike Nova Scotia in partnership with the Nova Scotia Chapter of the OCC and supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.
