CANCELLED DUE TO CONDITIONS – Boiler Trail Historic Guided Snowshoe Hike

10:30 am Local Guide Judy King – Naturally Active for Life Victoria County (Est. 2011). LEADER JUDY KING CAN ALSO BE REACHED AT 902.295.3141 FOR ROAD CONDITIONS, WEATHER, ETC.

The Boiler Trail is located in Rear Baddeck Forks – Westside Big Baddeck Rd (3 kms past Rockinghorse ranch on the left) and concludes with a visit to the 1930’s Boiler Steamer. The hike is about 3 hours totaling 18,750 steps. The Boiler Trail is located in Rear Baddeck Forks – Westside Big Baddeck Rd (3 kms past Rockinghorse ranch on the left, take that road to the trail head) and concludes with a visit to the 1930’s Boiler Steamer. The hike is about 2 hours totaling 12,500 steps. Length: 7.5 km Duration: 3 hrs Difficulty: The trail follows the Old Rear Forks road (Westside Big Baddeck Rd, 3 kms past Rockinghorse ranch on the left. Park on the right side of the road facing back towards Rockinghorse ranch and the snowshoe will begin at this road to the trail head). The trail is a gentle grade with an elevation gain of about 200 feet. The next 1.5 km is relatively level with an elevation gain of about 100 feet. There is a small creek at this point with a bridge and guardrail. From this point the steepness of the trail increases with an elevation gain of about 340 feet over the next 1.5 km.

Watch for the boiler on the right side of the trail. This portion is most pleasing as it passes through hardwood forest. There are occasional views of the hillsides and valley. In addition to the historical significance of the boiler, the early portion of the trail skirts and crosses Mill Brook on which once stood a water-powered grist mill.

History – Boiler Trail: Leo Fownes Grandfather’s Boiler, used in the 1930’s, and abandoned when the war started. The old steam engine that ran the boiler was brought down the mountain by Leo & Stephen and is stored in our Leo & Joan Fownes Shop. ‎Fownes bros late thirties brought it up ancient tech left in forties steam powered saw mills one Fownes.

Passed a lot of softwood. Guided Hike is part of the Hike NS Guided Snowshoe Hiking Series 2018, 2nd Annual Hello Winter Baddeck 2018, 7th Annual Hike Victoria Snowshoe Fest 2018 and 7th Annual Victoria County Winter ActiveFest 2018. 2018 WINTER CAMPAIGN

CapeBretonIslandYourHeartWillNeverKeaveLogoA

In 2017, Destination Cape Breton Association launched a Winter Pilot Campaign focused on the promotion of winter tourism product – ‘Cape Breton for Cape Bretoners.’  This supported the recommendations outlined in the Winter Tourism Product Analysis, Inventory, and Opportunities Assessment that was completed by Tourism Synergy Ltd.

DCBA recently held an information session on the Winter Tourism Opportunity and are now preparing for the 2018 Winter Campaign.  We are once again seeking operators and industry partners who are active during the winter season and wish to be profiled in this year’s campaign at no cost.

The 2018 program will include:

  • Featured listing on a new ‘Winter’ section of our website (cbisland.com).  DCBA has more content (photos & video) to be used that was captured during the 2017 campaign.
  • Listing in the ‘Winter’ brochure (4000 copies).
  • Conversion-based digital ads directed to your listing.
  • Dedicated posts on our social media channels.
  • Post-campaign summary report of your individual analytics.

Marketing initiatives will consist of online marketing (website and social media), and a print brochure as well as a partnership with SANS (Snowmobilers Association of Nova Scotia).  Participants will also be notified of any other opportunities to partner with DCBA on specific winter marketing initiatives.

If you are interested in participating in the 2018 Winter Campaign, please confirm your participation by Friday, November 17, by contacting:

Stacey St. John

Email:  stacey@dcba.ca

Phone:  902.539.2458

Once you have confirmed, Stacey will forward an email containing the information required from all participants.  Deadline for DCBA to receive your information is Thursday, November 30, 2017.

We hope you plan to participate in the 2018 Winter Campaign!
